Produttori del Barbaresco's Barbaresco 2022 is highly-rated, a deeply concentrated yet elegant vintage. It's the cooperative's classic blended Nebbiolo from vineyards across Barbaresco, Piedmont, made every vintage since 1958. Red cherry, rose petal and orange zest sit over firm, fine-grained tannin. It was rated 95 POINTS by Audrey Frick, and it's a wine for someone who wants real Barbaresco depth without the Riserva price.
In the glass it shows a bright ruby colour, with a lifted nose of blue flower and dried herbs, and a savoury spice edge. The palate stays fresh and precise, with fine, polished tannin and bright acidity carrying through to a long, clean finish.
It's a lovely introduction to what Produttori del Barbaresco does, and the kind of Barbaresco we'd reach for on a good weekend without waiting for an occasion. It's a great match for fresh pasta and roast meat.
What it tastes like
The nose opens with blue flower and red cherry, joined by orange zest, dried herbs and a whiff of star anise as it opens in the glass. It's an elegant, perfumed style, true to Produttori del Barbaresco's reputation for classic, old-school Nebbiolo.
The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannin and bright acidity giving real lift through the middle. The finish stays fresh and precise, without the weight of the cooperative's single-vineyard wines.
It's well balanced and food-friendly. It's delicious.

Who makes it
Produttori del Barbaresco is a growers' cooperative based in the village of Barbaresco, founded in 1958 by a parish priest who brought together 19 struggling local growers. It has grown to around 60 members, many of whom farm some of Barbaresco's best vineyard sites.
This Barbaresco is the cooperative's classic, blended wine, made every vintage since 1958 from grapes grown across multiple crus in the appellation. It's regarded as one of Italy's great wine values, sitting alongside the up to nine single-vineyard Riservas the cooperative bottles in the best years.
Produttori del Barbaresco works with minimal intervention, aiming for a true reflection of the Barbaresco appellation as a whole rather than any one site.
For the 2022 vintage, the grapes fermented at 28°C with 24 days on the skins, and the wine was aged in large oak casks before bottling in March.
About the vintage
The 2022 growing season in Barbaresco was hot and dry, continuing a run of low rainfall from 2020 and 2021, and many growers picked well ahead of a normal schedule. Yields dropped, especially on warmer, south-facing sites.
Despite the heat, the wines didn't show as a hot vintage: Decanter rated 2022 a good vintage for Barbaresco, describing wines with surprising freshness and purity rather than overripeness, with quality varying more than usual between producers.
The lower yields meant some fruit that would normally have gone into Produttori del Barbaresco's single-vineyard Riservas was blended into this wine instead, giving the 2022 vintage more depth and concentration than the cooperative's Barbaresco usually shows.
