When we opened The Winery in central Queenstown in May 2005 we were one of the world's first and largest wine tasting experiences. With a focus on bringing the best of New Zealand wine to one location, The Winery's reputation grew and in 2019 we were recognised by TripAdvisor in the World's Top 10 wine experiences People's Choice Awards.
In February 2020 The Winery opened a second store in Arrowtown, taking the experience to the next level with more whisky and gin tastings, our famous cheeseboards with a new tapas menu and a decor designed for the relaxation and comfort of our customers. RegisterMudbrick Matiatia Port 2021 is a fortified wine made from 100% Petit Verdot on Waiheke Island. It shows Christmas cake, vanilla pod, black cherry and spice, with balanced sweetness and a long finish. It suits anyone after a New Zealand answer to Port for the end of a meal.
Christmas cake, vanilla pod and black cherry come first, with a fragrant spice behind them. It smells like the end of a good dinner before you have tasted it.
The palate has concentrated black forest fruits and gentle tannins. Sweetness and acidity are in balance, so it stays fresh, and toasty oak adds warmth on a long finish.
Mudbrick makes Matiatia as a fortified wine in the style of Port, from Petit Verdot grown on Waiheke Island.
This wine has aromas of Christmas cake, vanilla pod, black cherry and fragrant spice. On the palate, concentrated black forest fruit sits with gentle tannins and toasty oak, and sweetness and acidity are in balance. The finish is long.
Robyn and Nick Jones established Mudbrick in 1992 and added the Shepherds Point site in 1998. Mudbrick's vines grow across four Waiheke Island sites: Mudbrick, Hawke's Crest at the western end, Shepherds Point, and Sea View Road, where Mudbrick's winery is based in Onetangi.
Hand harvesting is the norm for all of Mudbrick's fruit. In the vineyard each vine is pruned according to how it performs, shoots are tucked by hand, and leaves are removed by hand around the fruit.
Mudbrick gives Matiatia a window of 2025 to 2045 and beyond.
