The Amisfield Pinot Noir 2023 is from an organic estate beneath Mount Pisa, with ripe plum and blackberry. It was rated 94 POINTS by Cameron Douglas, MS (Master Sommelier), who calls it "complex, youthful and enticing". A great wine for everyone who likes aromatic, polished pinots.
In the glass it shows bramble fruit, subtle savoury spice and a layer of dried herb. It is a fantastic weekend wine for Pinot Noir drinkers who like some savoury character alongside ripe fruit. This wine would pair well with roast duck.
Amisfield also has a highly regarded 1 star Michelin restaurant and cellar door at Lake Hayes, Queenstown.

Who makes it
Amisfield was established in 1988 by John Darby in the early days of Central Otago winegrowing.
The wine comes from a 93-hectare single estate vineyard beneath Mount Pisa. The vineyard is certified organic by BioGro New Zealand.
Amisfield describes its approach as hands-off, letting the land express itself in the wines.
About the vintage
Sophie Preece, writing in NZ Winegrower, reported that Central Otago had exceptional conditions for the first 3 years of La Niña influence. Mid-season was very dry, with 150 growing degree days above the long-term average.
The final 4 weeks of harvest brought a sharp change in the weather. Consultant viticulturist Timbo Morrison-Deaker called it a "bombshell" and said it was a reminder of what frost fighting feels like in Central Otago. He expected lower alcohol wines from later-ripening areas, and said the vintage remained stellar, with larger berries and good yields.
Critic scores and ratings
- 94 POINTS – Cameron Douglas, MS – camdouglasms.com, April 2026
"Complex, youthful and enticing. Core of red and ruby with a light pink rim lead to a bouquet of ripeness, freshness and core of red fruit aromas suggesting dark fleshed cherry and boysenberry, some raspberry then scents of saline laced stone and a gentle wood smoke quality. Dry with textures from an abundance of fine tannins, plenty of polish, acidity and natural freshness. Balanced and well made, a wine still developing with best drinking from late 2027 through 2033+"
When to drink it
Cameron Douglas, MS says the wine is still developing, with best drinking from late 2027 through 2033+.
